The player's defensive strategy and frequent outbursts on the tennis court had prompted commentators to doubt if his capacity to perform at the top level was finished.

However the player has altered his approach in the past month, attempting to approach the net and play positively, supported by an better serving game.

Medvedev came back from a disadvantage in the first set against the tricky Frenchman, taking 4 of the concluding five exchanges to take the lead.

The pair swapped service breaks in the middle set before the challenger, bidding for his maiden professional victory, seized the initiative to push for a final set.

He defended four initial chances in a tight final set before Medvedev secured a break to 15 to secure the win.

Appropriately, he earned victory with a shot at the net, with the Frenchman failing to manage a return after a lengthy match.
