Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
